What does a typical day look like for a copywriter? Chaotic? Creative? Somewhere in between? The honest answer is that it depends on the day. But here’s what a pretty good one looks like.
7 am: Beep-beep, beep-beep
The alarm goes off and my hand finds the snooze button. I drag myself out of bed for a morning cuppa. A drop of milk and no sugar, please.
9 am: Emails, admin and getting my head in the game
Now I’m properly awake I check my inbox and ensure there’s nothing urgent that needs actioning. Next, it’s straight into Notion to check my dashboard, what’s due, and make sure my day is mapped out.
Having everything in one place means nothing slips through the cracks, and my brain can focus on the creative stuff rather than trying to remember what needs doing.

11 am: Properly stuck in
I’m on a roll now. Before I start writing, I’ll pull up the relevant client brief in Notion. This includes notes from our initial call, key messages, tone of voice guidance, all sitting there ready to go. Depending on the day, I might be writing website copy, crafting a blog post for a client, or writing a news article. No two days are quite the same which is honestly one of the things I love most about what I do.
1 pm: Time for food and a walk
It’s time to step away from the screen and enjoy lunch. If the weather is kind, I’ll pop out for a thirty minute walk to try and get my steps in. Being in front of a laptop all day means I don’t do as many steps as I’d like, so I make the effort to get outside at lunch.

2 pm: Client calls and collaboration
I try to save afternoons for client calls or catch-ups. That might be a new enquiry, a project briefing, or a check-in on ongoing work. My brain is in writing mode in the mornings, so I protect that time. Afternoons are when I switch into people mode.
I’ll take notes during the call so everything is captured and organised. Getting to understand someone’s business and what makes them tick is what helps me write copy that actually sounds like them rather than a generic website template.

4 pm: Edits, final touches and sending work off
The end of the day is usually spent reviewing drafts, making tweaks, and getting work sent over to clients. I’ll update the project status in Notion (moving things along the pipeline) and check what’s coming up tomorrow so I can hit the ground running in the morning.
6 pm: Time to switch off
Laptop closed. It’s time to step away from my desk to make dinner, detach from work for a bit and watch an episode or two of Hart of Dixie. Usually I work on my own business processes or marketing during the evening – when you’re self employed you’re never truly away from your desk!
